Bagni di Orvieto – Umbrian historic Medieval village for sale
Historic Notes
The earliest records of the original borgo, or village, date back to the late 13th century, when it was described as a fortified settlement with extensive lands.
The property was extended further in the first half of the 14th century by Messer Lupicini, the local Lord at the time, who was extremely prominent and influential in the public affairs of Orvieto.
In the centuries that followed, the property was repeatedly contested between various factions of the Monaldeschi family, apart from a brief period when it belonged to the Counts of Montemarte.
Documents show that from 1622 to 1674, the owners of the Villa di Bagni (which included the buildings and the surrounding lands) were the Cartari-Febei family, who was connected to the Piccolomini family. For over a century there were no documents relating to changes of ownership, until 1765, when the land and plans of the Villa di Bagni showed the Count Sforza Tarugi as the new owner.
In 1828, the "Palazzo di Bagni" estate (as it was then called) was owned by the Giulietti family and remained in their hands until they were forced to dispose of it in the course of the 20th century.
A number of important members of the clergy, including Pope Gregory the 16th, visited and stayed at the villa during the centuries of rule by the Papal States in this part of Italy.
